All our Home-Start volunteers must be a parent or have parenting experience. Before being matched to a family, all our volunteers must attend a preparation course. This course runs one morning or evening a week for approximately 12 weeks between 9.30 am - 12.30 or 6 pm - 8 pm. * The role of the Home-Start volunteer * How families are referred to Home-Start * 'Good enough' parenting * Values and attitudes * Child Protection * Confidentiality, commitment and boundaries * Maximising income * Play The preparation course is very informal and gives volunteers the opportunity to find out more about the project and what their role will be. The coordinators run the course and invite outside speakers such as Family Support workers, Health Visitors and Social Workers in to discuss their role.
Q - Do I need any formal qualifications? A - No. We ask that all our volunteers have parenting experience and some spare time available to support local families. Q - How much time will it take up? A - The minimum requirement is two hours per week at a time convenient for both yourself and the family. Q - Will I recevie any training? A - Yes, all new volunteers must attend our preparation course, which will equip you with the information you need to get started. We also have a programme of ongoing training for volunteers throughout the year. Q - Will I get paid expenses? A - Yes, we pay out of pocket expenses. Q - What support will I receive A - Individual telephone and face to face support by your coordinator or Manager as and when needed. Volunteers can contact their coordinator at any time to discuss any concerns they may have.
