Whats happening at Home-Start Corby...

Home-Start Volunteer Prep Course New Autumn 2019

We are currently recruiting for a our new Autumn Prep course, if you are a parent or have extensive parenting experience and have 2 hours to spare each week we would like to hear from you. We welcome people from all backgrounds as we work with a diverse range of families residing across the Borough of Corby.

As a Home-Start volunteer you will visit children and their families in their own homes for up to 2 hours per week offering befriending, listening and practical support and sign posting to community services available to them.

This is a very rewarding role which really can make a difference to a family when they are finding the early years of parenting challenging.

If you feel you have good practical skills and are a very good listener then we would be very interested to hear from you.

In return for your commitment we will offer a comprehensive training programme introducing you to the role, reimburse all out of pocket expenses and also cover any travel costs to enable you to visit your families using Home-Start as a base.

Tracy (Volunteer) "I enjoy sharing ideas and tips as to how to make family life easier"

Helen " Having a volunteer is a life line I was very anxious before but now I go to groups and get out to meet other parents my volunteer is great"

Home Wasn't Built in a Day project

‘Home Wasn’t Built In a Day’

Linking Resources Together for Families and Children

Home-Start Corby is delighted to have received funding of £393,015 from the Reaching Communities Big Lottery Fund to be used over a 4 year period for an exciting new project ‘Home Wasn’t Built in a Day’ which has been developed collaboratively with families in Corby.

Together with partner agencies across the town, Home-Start Corby will be in a position to offer local families much needed extra support of a more practical nature to supplement the emotional and caring support already on offer. This support will include opportunities for furniture up cycling, C.V writing, debt management, healthier living, trips and outing and support of a more general practical nature such as improving the home environment.

Home-Start Corby is a local organisation which recruits and trains parent volunteers to offer befriending, emotional and practical support to families living across the Borough of Corby where there is at least one child under 5 years. They can visit you and your family in your own home and will ensure your confidence and enjoyment of parenting is a priority. This is a very exciting way forward for them which is supported by children, families, and other organisations across the town.

Families have shared in our celebration and believe that ‘This will make me independent and not rely on family.’ – Lauren ‘This would help with my anxiety of doing it myself or asking for having to ask for help.’ –Kirsty ‘This would help teach my children to learn DIY and other skills.’ - Lisa

Tracy Gallagher and Angela Prodger Joint Heads of Pen Green Centre said ‘The centre staff, governors and parents are very excited about the new Home-Start project ‘Home wasn’t built in a day’. Parents have identified this is an area where there is much needed support and Home-Start with their team of volunteers are ideally placed to take this work forward’. The project will make such a difference to families with young children in Corby.’

‘I was delighted to hear that Home-Start in Corby has been awarded Big Lottery funding to help launch their project, Home Wasn’t Built in a Day. This is great news for Home-Start, and for the local community. When I made a visit to Home-Start back in October, I was able to hear directly from some of the families just how much of a huge help that Home-Start has been to them, by providing support to these parents; some of whom have difficulties with mental health. It is clear that this funding is extremely well-deserved, for an organisation that provides an invaluable lifeline for many people across Corby and I know this project will make a big difference.” - Tom Pursglove MP

‘Fantastic result! I look forward with great anticipation to our teams working together through this project to enable positive change for our communities.’ -Craig Spence - Neighbourhood Management and Community Safety Team ‘I am so pleased for you as I feel that you are doing such valuable work in the community. I thoroughly endorse your excellent work and look forward to being able to help and support you in the future. Yet again Corby is leading the way in terms of compassion & empowerment to the families who need it most.’ - Julie Riley- Corby Mayor

“Corby Town Shopping & Willow Place centre management and retailers are delighted to support and work with Home Start Corby, our partnership relationship is in its’ infancy but we will be supporting the fabulous work the charity does for families in Corby for many years to come. Securing 4 years Reaching Communities Lottery Funding underlines the amazing work the Home Start Corby team carry out in the community; having seen first-hand the tangible difference they make to families makes us proud to be a small part of this journey.” Dan Pickard- Centre Director

‘I am excited to get involved with this new project and can’t wait to help families learn new skills while learning new skills myself. It’s always great to learn something new and to pass on to others.’ – Zoe, Home-Start Volunteer

Eat Smart with Home-Start

This project is sponsored by Co-op and Pen Green Children's Centre and is a way of Home-Start volunteers working together with children and families in their own kitchens to share new cookery skills and recipes from each other. With financial demands being continually placed on families, items such as a whisk or blender may not be top of the agenda. Therefore, with money from being granted to Corby Home-Start for this project, Home-Start has designed a 'cookery sack'. These have been fantastically designed and made by Ellie our volunteer, in beautiful gingham and spotty materials recycled from old bed sheets. (Washed of course). These are then filled with useful utensils needed for all sorts of recipes and distributed to families alongside their volunteer, to use in the kitchen. The sacks are then converted into useful laundry bags. Children, families and their volunteers continue to thoroughly enjoy using these sacks and cooking together and the outcomes of laughter, burnt cakes and beautiful stews leave lasting homely smells in kitchens throughout Corby. All the smells that make a house a home. For more information please contact the office on 01536 409612 (For other Home-Start Schemes or different organisations please look at the Co-operative Community Fund and make an application).
