Eat Smart with Home-Start

Eat Smart with Home-Start began in our organisation as a pilot project, back in 2013. The idea behind the project was to give families the confidence and tools to enable them to cook healthy snacks and meals alongside their children. This project, led by our Family Support Worker, is carried out within the families home, where research shows families feel more comfortable.

Funded by The Big Lottery and Children in Need, we began by offering healthy eating on a budget sesions, where some families shared that they did not have adequate equipment to prepare lots of different meals, where in many homes, one pan and a knife were doing it all and spending money on kitchen equipment, just wasn't a priority.

As a solution to this dilemma, a volunteer designed cookery bags, made out of recycled materials. A small amount of money was raised through events for this purpose and enabled us to put utensils inside the bags for families to keep. We also provided aprons and equipment for children so that they could share the kitchen fun.

Families shared that the project had increased their understanding of eating on a budget and where to shop for bargains, they also added that their childrens confidence to try new things had increased.
